Biggest Bottlenecks To Scaling Consistently ($30k/day+)

I've been talking to quite a few ecom operators and have heard the same issues brought up repeatedly. Ads doing well, ad spend scaling, but they are being held back from consistent high scale because of back end issues.

The main reason I see for this is that the underlying foundation is shaky and doesn't grow alongside the scale of ad spend (I have had plenty of experience with this throughout my career before I realized the source of the issue; scaling to high 5-figure days for a few weeks, and then hitting major setbacks because of processing or CS).

This foundation is everything that makes up your business other than customer acquisition and revenue generation. It includes payment processing (where the main issues are shutdowns, and more frequently 10-20% holds that make free cash flow tighten), customer service management (bleeding money to refunds and chargebacks, which grow as you scale, and if you stop scaling, you'll be dealing with CB/refunds from the high scale for months), and fulfillment quality dropping with rapid scale.

The solution here is to take the foundation of your business just as seriously as you take ads and scaling. That could mean hiring dedicated people to communicate regularly with suppliers and processors to secure better deals and build trust, hiring a CS expert specializing in ecom and DR to build and manage your CS team, and in general being more on top of the back end foundations of the business.

When you have an ironclad back end, you can confidently focus on scaling your ads with new channels, new VSLs, new angles, and new offers. Without a stable foundation, all progress is built on a house of cards.

On this episode of the Direct Response Podcast, I sat down with Brandon Bardwell, who's done 8-figures in ecommerce sales, much of that using VSL ads and advertorial funnels. We discuss some details about his offers, his AOV and VSL scripting process, and how he uses AI to write copy and create videos and images.

In this video I go DEEP into the psychology and copy behind this 8-figure VSL script. I review the script and structure in depth, explaining why each piece was added and how it works. As I see it, AI is rapidly taking over (and mostly already has) the job of the copywriter. The person who is skilled in writing, communication, and direct response tactics. This role takes the “copy planning,” the mechanisms and big ideas, the structure, and fills everything in with words. They are responsible for wording and sentence structure. LLMs have become so effective at mimicking persuasive human writing; as long as they’re given clear instructions, big ideas, mechanisms, metaphors,...
